British accessories designer Sophia Webster has given London Fashion Week guests an exclusive preview of her flamboyant Autumn/Winter 2018. This glamourous collection – in collaboration with Coca-Cola – is inspired by the spirit and style of the classic Baz Luhrmann film Strictly Ballroom

Welcome to the vibrant and intensely competitive world of ballroom and Latin dance. British accessories designer Sophia Webster has been a fan of ballroom dancing and its glamour since she danced competitively at the Blackpool Tower ballroom – feather-stepping underneath its famous rococo ceiling.

Inspired by a classic

So it should come as no surprise that Sophia got inspiration for her latest collection from one of her all-time favourite ballroom-dancing films, Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom. The entire ‘I Don’t Need a Mango to Tango’ collection is bold, bright and spirited, bursting with crystals, feathers, sequins and colour.

Recreating a classic scene

In one of the film’s most memorable moments, the hero and heroine dance on a terrace beneath a giant and brightly lit Coca-Cola billboard. Drawing on this iconic scene, Sophia has collaborated with Coca-Cola to create two pairs of elegant Latin-style shoes with the Coca-Cola logo crystallised on the heel and embroidered in the satin – as well a ‘billboard’ clutch bag in signature Coca-Cola red and decorated with crystals. All three pieces are embellished with crystals which look like cold water droplets on a cool glass.

“Dance costumes have to be made in striking colour combinations, sequins and crystals to attract the attention of judges, and I loved bringing all this to life in AW18.” – Sophia Webster, designer

Bubbles and sparkles

One of the more flamboyant characters from the film, Tina Sparkle, has inspired the crystal fruit embellishments set against gold laser-cut uppers, as well as beaded tassel sandals of chartreuse and hot pink satin. Sophia’s one-off signature speech bubble bags appear throughout the show, featuring new design details including gold disco-ball kiss locks and ornate rococo handles.

Styled by Patti Wilson

Vogue Italia’s fashion-editor-at-large stylist Patti Wilson has included garments inspired by Sophia’s designs and glittering Latin dance costumes. The gowns, created by Christian Cowan, capture the sassy edge of the competitive dance scene and perfectly complement the crystals, feathers, embellishments and feminine drama of the collection.

Striking colour combinations

“The collection and show theme this season is very close to my heart as I grew up with competitive dancing,” says Sophia. “Dance costumes have to be made in striking colour combinations, sequins and crystals to attract the attention of judges, and I loved bringing all this to life in AW18. There is endless inspiration to create a bold and spirited collection, which is at the same time sexy, feminine and wearable.’’
