Our efforts to work towards a more sustainable future haven’t gone unnoticed. Here’s how our Fuze Tea and Honest Coffee drinks have earned a (certified) seal of approval...

Coca-Cola has been championing sustainability for many years. We’re always looking for ways to be greener; from making sure that all of our packaging is 100% recyclable, to our 2020 commitment to increase the volume of pre-recycled plastic (rPET) across all our drinks bottles. We’re working across our supply chain – from planting and harvesting ingredients to the production line – to develop actions and strategies to manage carbon and climate change.

That’s why we’re proud to be aligned with globally-recognised organisations such as the Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade, who are helping to protect our planet for future generations.

But what does certification from those organisations actually mean? And where do our drinks come in? Here’s everything you need to know…

Why is there a frog on my Fuze Tea?

In a 2015 Sustainable Agriculture panel, attended by Coca-Cola’s Director of Supplier Sustainability, Ben Jordan spoke about “working to more sustainably source our commodities” such as tea, to reduce our environmental footprint by improving our agriculture practices. We’re proud that, in the years since, we’ve been able to achieve this.

As a result, Fuze Tea products now carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ ‘green frog’ seal of approval, confirmation that our tea has been sourced sustainably from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ tea producers. This means that we meet the rigorous criteria of their Sustainable Agriculture Standard.

What is the Rainforest Alliance certification?

In order to be awarded the Rainforest Alliance certification, farms must: “meet the comprehensive standards of the Sustainable Agriculture Standard, which encompasses all three pillars of sustainability – social, economic, and environmental – and empower farmers with the knowledge and skills to negotiate for themselves in the global marketplace.”

How did we earn this seal of approval?

You may be surprised to know that after water, tea is the most consumed drink in the world. So, to earn the Rainforest Alliance’s seal of approval, we had to make sure that our Fuze Tea drinks followed sustainable practices.

Following the Rainforest Alliance’s farming framework, we’ve worked to transform our land-use practices by ensuring that all tea used to produce the extract in Fuze Tea comes from farms with guaranteed sustainable agriculture, where natural resources are conserved and the well-being of the local community and employees are the focus.

For the little green frog to remain on our Fuze Tea label, Rainforest Alliance monitors, evaluates and tracks our performance against set goals over time, ensuring everything stays as is.

Ethically Certified: Honest Organic Coffee

Placing just behind tea in the global rankings, coffee is the third most consumed beverage in the world. Even though our recently-released Honest Organic Coffee Latte and Honest Organic Coffee Mocha, were already certified organic by the Soil Association – the UK’s leading membership charity campaigning for organic, healthy, humane and sustainable food – we knew we wanted to go even further.  

That’s why we sought out Fairtrade certification to deepen our commitment to sustainability.

A Natural Fit

At its core, Fairtrade is about empowerment. The NGO is addressing issues surrounding conventional trade to “make a difference to the lives of the people who grow the things we love.” This means better wages, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

This philosophy mirrors the values of the Honest brand, which strives to be authentic and connect people to nature. “That means authenticity around quality of ingredients, taste, suppliers and our connection to consumers,” explains Honest co-founder Seth Goldman, adding that Honest is about “having a positive impact on the communities we source our ingredients from.”

The Fairtrade Mark

In order to receive the Fairtrade mark, companies, such as Coca-Cola, are required to meet Fairtrade’s social, economic and environmental standards. For our products to bear the Fairtrade mark, we needed to make sure the 100% Arabica coffee beans used in our Honest Organic coffee drinks were produced, harvested and packaged in an environmentally and socially responsible way.

How? By meeting the Fairtrade Minimum Price standard (which is never lower than the market price) and investing in business or community projects of the chosen by the people most affected. This enables farmers and workers who produce Honest coffee drinks to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Looking ahead

We’re well on our way to achieving our 2020 goal of using more sustainably sourced agricultural ingredients, and implementing crop-specific programs to enhance the economic wellbeing of farming communities.

We’re building industry-wide coalitions to gain alignment, and we’re driving change through key partnerships with our suppliers, customers and NGO leaders like Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade. Working together, we can make a difference and move towards a greener, fairer future.
