When women rise in their communities, the communities themselves rise to new heights of prosperity and health. Over and over, studies have found a direct correlation between women’s empowerment and GDP growth, business growth, environmental sustainability, improved human health, and other positive impacts.
In 2010, Coca-Cola launched an initiative called 5by20 that aims to empower 5 million women entrepreneurs across the company’s global value chain by the year 2020.
Specifically, that means the small businesses we work with in over 200 countries and territories around the world. In collaboration with our partners, we aim to help women entrepreneurs overcome the barriers they face to business success.
This includes women who:
- Produce ingredients,
- Supply goods,
- Distribute beverages,
- Own shops,
- Recycle packaging, and
- Create products from packaging.
In addition to being entrepreneurs, these women are also daughters, mothers, family leaders, caregivers and wives. They set ambitious goals and work hard to achieve those goals. They aspire to own their own businesses, provide a good education for their children, and create the best life possible for their families. 5by20 aims to provide the tools and skills needed to act on those dreams.
In the early 1900s, the United Nations began celebrating women and in 1975, International Women's Day was established as a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
