Forget getting your presents in time, the hardest thing at Christmas is picking the Designated Driver. So we’ve pulled together some fun ways to choose your hero – your designated driver for the night - who can claim a free second soft drink as part of our festive campaign.
Let’s face it, when it comes to a night out, it’s not easy choosing a Designated Driver i.e. someone to help the group get home safely after they’ve had a few drinks. The regular rotation has gone out of the window because it’s Christmas, nobody’s volunteering, things are getting tricky.
Well we’ve got some fun ways for you to pick a designated driver fair and square… without a short straw in sight
1. The actor name game
The test of brains.
Someone names an actor (any actor). The next person has to name an actor whose first name begins with the first letter of the previous actor’s last name.
The game is over when someone can’t name an actor in 5 seconds or repeats a name that’s already been used. That person becomes the Designated Driver for the night.
2. ‘My last text’
The test of bravery.
One by one, everyone has to read out the last text they sent. If everyone does, they do another round until someone caves in decides ‘that would be one text too far’, and refuses to read theirs aloud.
If that's you, put down your phone and grab your keys.

OK, you’ve scrolled enough...
3. Backwards alphabet
The test of skill.
It may sound simple, but it’s anything but.
Everyone has to recite the alphabet backwards and the person who messes up the most (e.g. 3 times in a row) gets to stay sober.
Look, it’s easy! Just say… Z Y X W V U T S R Q P O N M L K J I H G F E D C B A
Don’t you dare spell ‘The Alphabet’ backwards instead
4. Spin the bottle
The test of fate.
Or, if you don’t want to think or embarrass anyone, there’s always the classic test of fate – spin the bottle.
Grab an empty
And no, you’re not doing ‘best of 3’.
Oh and for anyone wondering – here’s what a bottle-eye view looks like
If you lose, don’t worry – we’re looking out for you.
5. Draw straws
The test of luck.
When you first get to the pub grab a bunch of straws – one for every member in your group. Then, using a pair of scissors (just ask the bar tender), cut one of them a tad shorter than the rest.
Hold them in one hand, so they appear the same length. The friend who pulls the short straw, literally, is your Designated Driver for the night.
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who you choose, as the loser still lucks out with a free second soft drink on
Designated Driver is run in partnership with the Department for Transport’s THINK! Drink Drive campaign, and rewards those who do the driving over the festive period to help friends and family get home safely. All the Designated Driver has to do is show their keys at the bar to claim a free second soft drinks.
