This summer we want to get consumers recycling more bottles than ever before. That’s why we’ve launched our first-ever reverse vending machines. For every plastic bottle you recycle, you’ll receive 50% off one of Merlin Entertainment’s leading attractions, including Alton Towers and LEGOLAND Windsor.

Coca-Cola Great Britain have joined forces with Merlin Entertainments to offer big discounts at some of the UK’s best-known attractions. All you have to do is recycle one or more of your empty plastic bottles at one of our special reverse vending machines to receive a 50%-off voucher.

“One of the biggest issues for consumers is finding somewhere to recycle when they’re out and about”

#WorldWithoutWaste
It’s our goal at The Coca-Cola Company to collect and recycle a bottle or can for every one we sell by 2030. This is part our World Without Waste global strategy.

But one of the biggest issues for consumers is finding somewhere to recycle when they’re out and about. In fact, our recent research showed that 64% of Brits would recycle more on-the-go if they were rewarded instantly for their actions.

“We want to reward people for doing the right thing”  – Jon Woods, Coca-Cola Great Britain General Manager

Innovative machines
This summer we’ll trial these reverse vending machine between 25 July and 31 August 2018. These innovative machines will be installed at four of Merlin’s leading attractions and will instantly reward those who deposit their empty bottles with a voucher to receive 50% off entry at 30 participating Merlin attractions including:

1. Alton Towers Resort

2. Thorpe Park

3. Chessington World of Adventures

4. LEGOLAND Windsor

Rewarding people for doing the right thing
Jon Woods, General Manager of Coca-Cola Great Britain, says: “We want to reward people for doing the right thing by recycling their bottles and hope to encourage some people who wouldn’t otherwise have done so.

“Through this exciting new trial with Merlin Entertainments we hope to remind people how valuable their empty plastic bottle is. All of our bottles can be recycled and we want to get as many of them back as possible so they can be turned into new bottles and not end up as litter.”

Doubling the amount of recycled plastic in our bottles
Jon explains how this is all part of Coca-Cola’s global strategy to work towards a world without waste. “We buy more recycled plastic in the UK than any other company and we’re in the process of doubling the recycled plastic in all our bottles from 25% to 50% by 2020.

“We’re also running television campaigns encouraging people to recycle, putting clear recycling messages across all of our packs and we’re supportive of new interventions, such as deposit return schemes, to see if they improve recycling rates.”

We want to be ‘as sustainable as possible’
The announcement is the latest in a series of commitments that we’ve made as a company to ensure our packaging is as sustainable as possible, and to encourage more people to recycle.

Since the launch of our sustainable packaging strategy last year, Coca-Cola Great Britain have introduced clearer on-pack recycling messaging on our bottles and aired a dedicated recycling advert called ‘Love Story’ which has reached over 30m people.

Largest user of recycled food-grade plastic
Coca-Cola Great Britain also continues to be the largest user of recycled food grade plastic in the UK with a commitment to increase the recycled PET in our packs to 50% by 2020. We’re also continuing to work closely with UK and Scottish governments looking at the introduction of a well-designed deposit return scheme and other ways to increase recovery and recycling rates.

‘So easy to use’
Jon Dormer, Managing Director at Unisan UK, supplier of CafeCrush™ reverse vending machines, says using the machine couldn’t be simpler. “It’s really easy to use the machine. You simply insert an empty plastic bottle, it’s crushed and then they receive your 50% voucher.

“The way the reverse vending machine works means the bottles aren’t contaminated by other waste, which is perfect for recycling.”

Plus, because they are crushed, reducing waste volume by up to 90%, more bottles can be stored and therefore less transportation is needed to get them to recycling facilities – a win for Coca-Cola fans and the environment.

Contributing to a better environment
Sandra Hazel, Head of Force for Good at Merlin Entertainments, says the partnership with Coca-Cola Great Britain is about both companies’ shared ambition to use the power of our brands for good. “We’re constantly looking for ways to raise awareness and help contribute to a better environment. As a responsible business and an advocate for marine conservation, we’re pleased to be joining forces with Coca-Cola Great Britain to encourage people to recycle more this summer, by rewarding them with family fun.”
