As the festive party season begins, new research from Coca-Cola Great Britain has found that we are a nation of partygoers with a third of Brits (30%) planning to attend three or more Christmas parties in December.

But as we let our hair down over the Christmas period, two thirds (64%) admit they will have one too many drinks, with more than a quarter (27%) preparing to deal with at least four festive hangovers.

To reward those who are taking on the role of the designated driver on nights out this Christmas, Coca-Cola has brought back its Designated Driver offer, giving drivers two-for-one on selected soft drinks at participating pubs and bars across the country.

To highlight the benefits of being the designated driver this Christmas, Coca-Cola has revealed the toughest Christmas tasks to undertake after a big party. More than two thirds (67%) of people say that having a big night out makes it harder to prepare for Christmas, with cooking for friends and family the top festive task we find hardest to do when hungover. A third (32%) of people also said that they can’t face doing the big Christmas food shop in a busy supermarket when feeling worse for wear.

Top 10 Christmas tasks we can’t face after a big night out:

Cooking for friends and family

Spending time with friends and family

Doing the big Christmas food shop

Keeping the children entertained

Wrapping presents

Buying presents

Drinking alcohol

Eating Christmas dinner

Writing Christmas cards

Decorating the tree / house

Coca-Cola’s Designated Driver offer is run partnership with the Department for Transport’s THINK! road safety campaign. The initiative rewards people who are driving to the pub over the festive period by offering a free second soft drink when they purchase a Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Life, Coca-Cola Zero, Diet Coke, or a Schweppes drink, including the newly launched Schweppes Sparkling Juice Drinks. This year Appletiser has also been added to the line-up providing even more options to choose from.

Coca-Cola Great Britain has also launched a new online Designated Driver Pub Finder tool ( so partygoers can search for a participating pub near them.

Jon Woods, General Manager, Coca-Cola Great Britain, said: “For the eighth year in a row, designated drivers at pubs across the country will be rewarded with free drinks so that they can celebrate the festive period and help to get their friends and family home safely. This is our way of thanking the unsung heroes of the festive party season, whilst helping make sure the roads are a bit safer for everyone.”

Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association said: “It’s great to see so many pubgoers embracing the idea of having a designated driver – support from companies like Coca-Cola Great Britain for the campaign really is making a difference. Being a designated driver doesn’t stop you having a great night out at Christmas. But it does mean that everyone can have a safe journey home.”

Andrew Jones MP, Roads Minister, said: “Drivers know that drink driving is wrong. It can destroy families and ruin lives. Yet some people at Christmas will still take the risk and get behind the wheel when they shouldn’t.

“Over the past 30 years drink drive deaths have fallen significantly but every death or serious injury is one too many. The best way for drivers to keep themselves and other road users safe is simple: don’t drink and drive.”

When polled, the majority of Brits polled (58%) agree that the main benefit of choosing a soft drink this Christmas is having a clear head the next day, with a third (35%) saying going alcohol-free also saves them money.

About Think!
THINK! aims to encourage all road users to recognize that it is the small things they do that can lead to crashes on the road and that there are simple steps they can take to reduce their risk to themselves and others. THINK! gives road users clear, actionable, evidence based advice and aims to help road users to make an informed decision regarding their behaviour on the roads.

In the last 50 years road casualties caused by drink driving have fallen dramatically, but in 2013, there were still 240 deaths due to drink driving – accounting for 14% of all road fatalities. By drinking and driving, drivers risk their lives, those of their passengers and others on the road.
