Somerset students rise to challenge to claim top design award

30 Apr 2007

Two students from Somerset College have won first prize in
The 'Coca‑Cola'/Nude 2007 Design Challenge.

Amy Dickinson and Vicki Willatts overcame stiff opposition from Kingston University to take top spot after presenting their interpretations of the 'Coca‑Cola' brand's global positioning and communication platform, the 'Coke Side of Life' to the judging panel.

Damien Dupond, Brand Manager from Coca‑Cola Great Britain (CCGB) and one of the judges explained, "We were bowled over with the results from the 3 finalists. The idea behind the Design Challenge is to create 'live briefs' for students to demonstrate their creativity and gain invaluable experience in understanding the essence and responding to a clients brief.

Not only did the team create a concept which has received massive client praise but also presented it in a way that demonstrated huge potential succeed well in the industry."

Tutors Jane Kelly from Somerset College were equally delighted with Amy and Vicki's success. "This was an extremely tough brief but the winning design is so beautifully pure, which is a great reminder to all students that just because the brief is for a huge company such as 'Coca‑Cola', the perfect solution can be simple", said Kelly.

All the finalists work will be revealed shortly on Coca‑Cola.com and Amy and Vickis' winning concept has been presented throughout the organization.

Notes to Editors:
The Design Challenge judging panel consisted of Damien Dupond, Coca‑Cola GB Brand Manager, Karen Dyer, Coca‑Cola GB Graphics and Presence Manager, and Design Challenge pioneers Bernard Gormley, Tony Enoch and Mike Parsonson from Nude.

Nude were formed in 2004 by Gormley, Enoch, Parsonson and Alistair Ferguson. All four had experiences in large design companies, (Gormley formed Ziggurat and Ferguson a founding partner of LFH, Enoch, a former Assistant Creative Director at Coley Porter Bell, became an Associate Director at LFH. Parsonson has designed for both LFH and Ziggurat).

They joined together with a common goal of creating a small agency that focused solely on the creative output and not 'empire building'!

We aim to put into practice our own sense of intrigue, curiosity and imagination and to create work that stimulates out outperforms the clients expectations. We are not out to shock, but to find real difference that creates genuine desire. Nude hopes to encourage the same approach to students via the Design Challenge.

'Coca‑Cola', 'Coke', 'diet Coke', 'diet Coca‑Cola' and 'the Coke Side of Life' are registered trade marks of The Coca‑Cola Company.
