Swimming tips for beginners
Olympic swimmer, Keri-anne Payne, encourages everyone to dive in

Olympic swimmer Keri-anne Payne is passionate about her sport and encouraging everyone to try out one of Great Britain's favourite get fit activities as part of a Schweppes Abbey Well free swim offer.
Says Keri-anne Payne: "Whether you choose front crawl, breaststroke or doggy paddle, swimming is one of the best forms of exercise as it has no impact on your joints and provides a full body work out. With the London 2012 Olympic Games drawing ever closer there's never been a better time to get into the water."
Keri-anne's top tips for beginners
- If you lack confidence, go with a friend or group who can give encouragement and support
- Start by aiming to complete short distances in each session and gradually build it up - this will make you feel like you are constantly achieving and keep you motivated to continue
- If it's been a long time since you last swam you may need some pointers on technique, so why not join a local club or have a couple of lessons
- Bring different training aids to make each session different - if you haven't swum for a while flippers can help by increasing the propulsion from each kick
- If you haven't done any exercise for a long time then swimming is one of the best ways to start, as there is no impact on your joints whilst swimming
- Swimming is a vital life skill, so if you haven't swum for a long time, it's important to check you are still comfortable with your ability in the water
To inspire everyone to get started, Schwim Free from Schweppes Abbey Well (the official water of the London 2012 Olympic Games) is offering a complimentary swim on the bottle cap of every Abbey Well water.
This promotion is now closed. During the three-year campaign, over 175,000 Schweppes Abbey Well bottle tops were exchanged for free swims.
