Newham residents are being invited to celebrate the first International Day of Yoga on Sunday 21 June with a range of free sessions from the ParkLives programme, delivered by Coca-Cola Great Britain, Newham Council and the council’s leisure trust activeNewham.

In addition to Hatha Yoga, Pranayama, Relaxation Yoga and a special Family Yoga session, residents will be able to try Broga®, which is the latest fitness trend to come to the UK from America.

Broga® is a new form of fitness yoga, combining a workout with accessible yoga postures to develop strength and increase mobility. Designed to improve performance and reduce the possibility of injury, it was founded by former American football star and super-heavyweight bodybuilding champion, Matt Miller.

It is just one of hundreds of fun and free ParkLives sessions taking place across Newham this summer, aimed at getting thousands of residents up, active and socialising in their local parks. The other sessions on offer include Zumba, walking football and family tennis lessons.

ParkLives is part of Coca-Cola Great Britain’s commitment to invest £20m between now and 2020 on programmes encouraging and supporting people to be physically active. The ParkLives sessions are generally an hour long and are being held at more than 21 community green spaces across Newham, including Stratford Park and Plashet Park.

Indira Nandha, ParkLives Yoga Instructor, said: “We are celebrating the first ever International Yoga Day by holding a fun filled day for the whole family at Central Park. There is a great line up of different styles of yoga with local teachers, and if people enjoy it they are very welcome to come back for more as there are plenty of free ParkLives yoga sessions taking place in Newham over the summer!”

Councillor Ian Corbett, mayoral advisor for environment and leisure, said: “It is always good to try new exercises and activities to keep motivated and work all parts of your body. This new form of yoga is just one of the many activities on offer through ParkLives for people of all ages across the summer. I would urge everyone to take advantage of the sessions on offer as they may find they enjoy something they have never had the chance to try before.”

Matt Miller, founder of Broga®, holds a degree in sports training and physiology from America’s National Association of Sports Medicine as well as a certificate of Advanced Nutrition from the University of California.

Matt said: “Broga® is a fantastic way to increase flexibility and teach muscle groups to work in harmony. Participants see an improvement in strength, stamina and mobility from the very first session. We’re really excited to be supporting the ParkLives initiative, helping people of all ages and abilities get more active, and really hope to see more men getting involved and experiencing the benefits.”

The celebrations for the International Day of Yoga are taking place at Central Park and begin at 10.00am. The Broga® session starts at 10.15am, followed by Hatha Yoga at 11am, Pranayama at 11.45am, Family Yoga at 12.30pm and Relaxation / Sleep Yoga for all at 1.15pm.
