Introducing stevia sweetener
A new sweetener from natural origins, to offer you more choice
Stevia sweetener contains zero calories and is extracted from the leaves of the stevia plant. The stevia plant is a relative of the chrysanthemum, native to Paraguay, and has been used to sweeten drinks ever since indigenous people first discovered its flavour. It has been grown, harvested and used in South America for around 200 years.
Did you know? The leaves of the stevia plant are a source of intense, natural sweetness – meaning that sweeteners made from stevia are up to 200 times sweeter than table sugar, even though they’re calorie free!
The Coca‑Cola Company has been working on innovations in sweetness for 50 years to help deliver a variety of products that offer refreshment, enjoyment, nutrition and contribute to your daily fluid intake.
The stevia sweetener we use was developed in response to strong consumer demand for great-tasting, sweetened drinks that contain ingredients from natural origins, as well as fewer calories.
Stevia extract in our drinks
In 2013 we introduced our zero-calorie, stevia-based sweetener to Sprite, reducing the sugar content by 30% compared with its previous recipe while still offering a great refreshing taste.
In 2014 we launched Coca‑Cola Life, a lower-calorie cola sweetened using a blend of sugar and stevia leaf extract. Coca‑Cola Life contains a third less sugar and a third fewer calories than Coca‑Cola.1
Today, The Coca‑Cola Company uses stevia sweetener in more than 45 products worldwide. To make these drinks, we combine the stevia sweetener with fruit juice, sugar or other low- and no-calorie sweeteners.
We'll continue to explore using stevia extract in our products to ensure we deliver great-tasting drinks with the option of reduced calories.
1 Reduction by one third of the calories than full sugar colas in GB, due to 37% sugar reduction, thanks to the presence of stevia extract.
