Leading regulatory authorities around the world recognise caramel colouring as safe for use in numerous foods and drinks, ranging from baked goods such as breads and cakes to dark beers to soups and soy sauce to colas. 

In December 2012, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reaffirmed the safe combined use of caramel colours, following a comprehensive review of the scientific literature.
