Our greenest bottle yet

Introducing our new Coca‑Cola packaging, made partially from plants and completely recyclable

PlantBottle packaging

At Coca‑Cola we are always looking for new ways to lower the impact our packaging has on the environment. Our new, innovative PlantBottle™ plastic is the latest step on our journey towards petroleum-free plastic.

Our PlantBottle range looks and feels just like regular plastic bottles. However, they’re made using up to 22.5 per cent plant materials - renewable resources that will grow again and again, effectively reducing our dependency on fossil fuels – and combined with up to 25 per cent recycled plastic.

PlantBottle by numbers

  • In 2010 alone, 2.5 billion PlantBottle packages were introduced in 9 countries
  • By the end of 2011 we will have well over 5 billion PlantBottle packages in circulation in 20 countries
  • By 2020, our vision is that every plastic bottle will be made from a combination of plant-based materials and recycled PET plastic
  • For more fun PlantBottle facts, take a look at our infographic.

To create PlantBottle packaging, we worked with industry leaders and environmental charities to find a sustainable plant material that wouldn’t harm the ecology or the people of the region where it is produced. The only source meeting these criteria at the moment is Brazilian sugarcane, which is primarily rain-fed and grown on abundant, arable land using organic fertilisers. The plantations from which we source are far away from the Amazon rainforests, and their impact on biodiversity is lower thanks to good farming practices.

Did you know? We’re busy working on the next step of our journey to create petroleum-free packaging. In the future, we hope to use an even wider variety of natural plant sources to create PlantBottle plastic, including fruit peel, bark, stems and wood chips.

Where you come in

  • Look for the green PlantBottle logo when buying 500ml plastic bottles of Coca‑Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero
  • You and your family can make our packaging even greener by ‘closing the loop’ and recycling your empty bottles. Recycling your bottles cuts the carbon footprint of a bottle by around 40%.
