A workplace 'wake up call'
Coca‑Cola sponsored health programme for Homerton Hospital staff gets results

Coca‑Cola Great Britain is announcing renewed support for a workplace health programme at Homerton Hospital, East London, a scheme that we have sponsored since January 2010.
Why we’re committed to Homerton Healthworks
Inspired by our own commitment to workplace wellness among Coca‑Cola staff, the ‘Healthworks at Homerton’ scheme offers free on site advice on nutrition and stress, and a programme of physical activity initiatives that staff can access within their working environment while at work.
One year on, a report by independent think tank, 2020health, shows that this project has positively improved fitness and lifestyle opportunities, met key NHS workplace health objectives and had transferability and scalability potential in other NHS locations.
Project coordinator and former Team Great Britain Olympic athlete, Shani Anderson, has also seen real success amongst participating members of staff:
Petra Cox (mum of two and Programme Manager):"I've always really enjoyed exercise but working part time and having two beautiful small children has made it impossible for me to get to the gym. So I've joined the Healthworks running club on a Wednesday, and along with a nice bunch of like minded Homerton workers, we run to the local park and test ourselves with Shani leading us up hill sprints! The first week was hard going, but after that we have all found it getting easier... It suits me perfectly as I get some exercise and get away from my desk for that brief period, also I've lost weight and my clothes are a far more comfortable fit then they were over winter!"
Preeda Harish-Kumar (System Developer):
"When I started with all the Healthworks activities such as Nordic Walking, running and circuit training, I was as unfit as they come - but now I can proudly say that I am much fitter and inspired to continue. Nordic Walking, for example - a specific walking technique using poles that increases the use of the upper body - is incredibly fun and very sociable, which keeps me going back. Benefits of these classes for me are meeting my goals which I set before I started. For example, my BMI is coming down, I feel healthier, more toned and I have bounds of energy! Exercising at work may seem impossible, but I have found it easier than trying to find time to exercise after work. I would recommend any of the Healthworks classes as they are most enjoyable and do not put a dent in your pocket, as they are free."
Supporting a range of activities
Jon Woods, Country Manager, Coca‑Cola Great Britain and Ireland said: “At Coca‑Cola we see it as vitally important that our involvement with sport and fitness is not just about high profile events but also engages ordinary people with busy lives. The report into Healthworks at Homerton tells of over 600 people attending the health festival, nearly 200 people attending weekly classes ranging from Pilates and netball to Nordic walking. It’s clear to see that Healthworks at Homerton has the strength to live on and grow – and I’m delighted that as it does Coca‑Cola Great Britain will be there to support it.”
